One of my favorite experiences is exploring the southwestern desert in the spring. The colors of the cactus blooms are indescribably intense—vivid bursts of color exploding from some of the most unfriendly botanicals you've ever seen! I wouldn’t recommend trying to pick them, though—unless you have thick leather gloves and some sturdy tongs. It’s far better to admire them from a safe distance, snapping photos to capture their radiant beauty and enjoy for years to come.

Artist's Statement: Although the subject appears to be surrounded in darkness as if it were night, the photo reference for this piece was actually taken in deep shade. I exaggerated the seclusion to create the feeling of viewing a shadowy form with a shaft of light streaming from above, highlighting only the spectacular blossom and the tip of the cactus carrying it. ~ tch
