"The significance of the painted stripes on the face of this Native American tells the story of his Crow Medicine Man ancestry."

One of the opportunities I have is to attend an annual event at the Crow Reservation in Southeastern Montana where I photograph many references for my paintings. When I took the reference photo for this piece the afternoon sun had created strong shadows across this man's face. Replacing the shadows with a mysterious smoky teal hue in the painting created an aura of ancient powers. I later found out that this man’s great, great grandfather was a medicine man and one of Custer’s scouts. He has indeed inherited the “Ancient Medicine” of his ancestors.
