Spirit of the Elders

The concept for "Spirit of the Elders" came from a wonderful bison skull displayed in my studio. I took several reference photos of the skull with dramatic lighting, just to see what would come of it. Several of the images set my imagination into overdrive. I started imagining how I could create a spiritual drama with lighting, shadows, and abstraction. I started with a textured cradled panel that created an irregular roughness throughout the piece. The background was created with multiple layers of drips, scrapes, and tooling with anything I could find in my studio. After the oils dried, I overlaid the skull, highlighting his shadows in deep reds. The result is of a somewhat-ghostly image of a bison skull juxtaposed against an imaginary field.
