The Matilija Poppy thrives in the dry, sunny climates of Southern California and Baja Mexico. The blossom can be up to 9" wide with a crepey white 'skirt' and a glowing ball of golden stamens. Although the petals are white, I have always been fascinated by their resemblance to the colorfully twirling skirts of the Mexican Dancers of Baile Folklorico. Since the blossoms on each plant are prolific, it is easy to imagine the stage filled with these bridal-like performers as they spin across the desert floor. ~tch
